Counting Syllables Activities Phonological Awareness Activities Spring Theme

Teach syllables with this multi-sensory syllable counting and sorting activity. This Spring themed phonological awareness activity will get kids active while they play with words. These activities are perfect for literacy centers, ELA centers, and literacy work stations in preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, homeschool, or special education classroom. Perfect for independent, small group, and even circle time activities.

Children can practice segmenting and counting syllables in spring-themed words as they jump, touch their toes, stomp, clap, and tap their head. Word cards can also be sorted onto the sorting mats or into sorting containers. Activity ideas are included.

Use the Action Spinner: Children select a picture card and spin the spinner. Children perform the action indicated on the spinner as they segment the word into syllables. For example, if a dragonfly card is selected and the spinner points to "jump", the children will jump 3 times as they say and segment the word "dra-gon-fly"

Use the Sorting Mat: Children select a picture card, count or clap the syllables in the word, and place the card onto the appropriate mat. This activity can be adapted for use on a magnetic board or busy book.

Sort into Containers: The 4 sorting labels can be attached to buckets, baskets, flower pots, boxes, etc. Children sort the picture cards into the appropriate container.

You can also use the cards to play I Spy, as a seasonal addition to your writing center, or in a block syllable activity. (directions are included).
