Children can practice segmenting and counting syllables throughout the year with seasonal word cards, action spinners, sorting mats, and sorting labels.

Use the Action Spinner: Children select a picture card and spin the spinner. Children perform the action indicated on the spinner as they segment the word into syllables. For example, if a snowman card is selected and the spinner points to "leg kick", the children will do 2 leg kids as they say and segment the word "snow-man"

Use the Sorting Mat: Children select a picture card, count or clap the syllables in the word, and place the card onto the appropriate mat. This activity can be adapted for use on a magnetic board or busy book.

Sort into Containers: The 4 sorting labels can be attached to buckets, baskets, flower pots, boxes, etc. Children sort the picture cards into the appropriate container.

You can also use the cards to play I Spy, as a seasonal addition to your writing center, or in a block syllable activity. (directions are included).
